The Team

James Patterson (BA and MAT UMass Amherst, PhD UT Austin) is the Language Program Director in Classics at Yale. He is inspired by Matthew Lipman’s “community of inquiry” and finds solace in Greek and Latin comparative linguistics. Aside from language instruction, James works on intellectual history and religion in North Africa.
David Welch (BA UC Davis, MA Kansas) is a PhD candidate in Classics at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is finishing a dissertation on the intermedial relationship between Julius Caesar’s Commentaries and the Roman triumphal procession. In addition to intermediality and Roman historiography, his research interests include language pedagogy and receptions of classical antiquity in modern science fiction.
