Introduction

Some verbs form the present progressive indicative middle and passive without a theme vowel. Thus, they are called athematic:

BASE

progressive aspect marker

/μαι          /μεθα /σαι          /σθε /ται           /νται

For instance:

δυνα/μαι > δύναμαι	I am able
θι/θε/ται > τίθεται	she/he/it is put, placed
ὀλ/νυ/μεθα > ὀλλύμεθα	we are destroyed

Most verbs in this category are /μι verbs.
