Thematic Present Progressive Indicative Middle and Passive


Introduction

Verbs use the same progressive aspect markers that they use in the active to form the progressive active middle or passive. Only the personal markers change:

* Intervocalic σ drops from /εσαι resulting in /εαι (Ionic) or /ῃ or /ει (Attic) after contraction.


Intermediate

Here are the seven types of progressive aspect markers (left column) with some examples:

Zero Markerλεγ/εται > λέγεταιit is said
/J/νομιδ/J/εται > νομίζεταιit is thought
ταγ/J/ονται > τάσσονται (Ionic) or τάττονται (Attic)they are arranged
φαν/J/ομαι > φαίνομαιI seem

Nu Suffixτεμ/ν/εσθε > τέμνεσθεyou are being cut
βαλ/ν/ομεθα > βαλλόμεθαwe are being hit
αἰσθ/αν/εσαι > αἰσθάνειyou perceive
πυ[ν]θ/αν/εσθε > πυνθάνεσθε (nu suffix with nu infix)you learn by hearsay
