Athematic Progressive Active Participles

Introduction

Notably, the only verbs that exist in this category
are /μι and /νυ/μι verbs <link to vocab list>.

The thematic progressive active participle uses the suffix /οντ/, where ο is a theme vowel that lengthens to mark the masculine nominative singular:

τέμ/ν/οντ/L > τέμνων (masculine nom. sing.)
τέμ/ν/οντ/ > τέμνον (neuter nom. sing.)
τέμ/ν/οντ/ος > τέμνοντος (masculine or neuter gen. sing.)

τέμ/ν/οντ/Jα/ > τέμνουσα (feminine nom. sing.)
τέμ/ν/οντ/Jα/Lς > τεμνούσης (feminine gen. sing.)

The athematic progressive active participle uses simply /ντ/, without the theme vowel ο. Because there is no theme vowel to lengthen to mark the masculine nominative singular, is added:

θι/θέ/ντ/ς > τιθείς (masculine nom. sing.)*
θι/θέ/ντ/ > τιθέν (neuter nom. sing.)
θι/θέ/ντ/ος > τιθέντος (masculine or neuter gen. sing.)

θι/θέ/ντ/Jα/ > τιθεῖσα (feminine nom. sing.)
θι/θέ/ντ/Jα/Lς > τιθείσης (feminine gen. sing.)

* θιθε- dissimilates to τιθε- because of Grassmann’s Law.

Really the only notable difficulty of the athematic progressive active participle is the masculine nominative singular. Again, because there is no theme vowel to lengthen, is added. The resultant form may not look like a masculine nominative singular, but it is. See also
