Athematic Progressive Active Participles
Introduction
Notably, the only verbs that exist in this category
are /μι and /νυ/μι verbs <link to vocab list>.
The thematic progressive active participle uses the suffix /οντ/, where ο is a theme vowel that lengthens to mark the masculine nominative singular:
τέμ/ν/οντ/L > τέμνων (masculine nom. sing.)
τέμ/ν/οντ/ > τέμνον (neuter nom. sing.)
τέμ/ν/οντ/ος > τέμνοντος (masculine or neuter gen. sing.)
τέμ/ν/οντ/Jα/ > τέμνουσα (feminine nom. sing.)
τέμ/ν/οντ/Jα/Lς > τεμνούσης (feminine gen. sing.)
The athematic progressive active participle uses simply /ντ/, without the theme vowel ο. Because there is no theme vowel to lengthen to mark the masculine nominative singular, /ς is added:
θι/θέ/ντ/ς > τιθείς (masculine nom. sing.)*
θι/θέ/ντ/ > τιθέν (neuter nom. sing.)
θι/θέ/ντ/ος > τιθέντος (masculine or neuter gen. sing.)
θι/θέ/ντ/Jα/ > τιθεῖσα (feminine nom. sing.)
θι/θέ/ντ/Jα/Lς > τιθείσης (feminine gen. sing.)
* θιθε- dissimilates to τιθε- because of Grassmann’s Law.
Really the only notable difficulty of the athematic progressive active participle is the masculine nominative singular. Again, because there is no theme vowel to lengthen, /ς is added. The resultant form may not look like a masculine nominative singular, but it is. See also
