Future Middle Participle
Introduction
To form the future middle participle, we take the future stem and add the thematic middle participle marker /όμενο/ for the masculine and neuter and /όμενα/ for the feminine:
ἐσ/σ/όμενο/ς > ἐσσόμενος or ἐσόμενος*
ἐσ/σ/όμενα/L > ἐσσομένη or ἐσομένη
ἐσ/σ/όμενο/ν > ἐσσόμενον or ἐσόμενον
* We find ἐσσόμενος in Homer. By the Classical Period, σσ had reduced to σ by geminate reduction.
| BASE | /σ/ or /ε/ | /όμενο/ /όμενα/ | case markers |
Many verbs that are standardly active in the progressive and aorist are deponent in the future. This possibly reflects a desiderative use of the middle.
