Future Active Infinitive
Introduction
To make the future active infinitive, simply add /ειν to the future stem:
λέγ/σ/ειν > λέξειν
ϝερ/έ/ειν > ἐρέειν (Ionic) or ἐρεῖν (Attic)
| BASE | /σ/ or /ε/ | /ειν |
Intermediate
English does not have a future infinitive, so there’s not a great way to translate the Greek future infinitive in isolation. Take a look at the future infinitive in the following sentences:
| μέλλω ταῦτα λέξειν αὐτὸν ταῦτα ἐρεῖν νομίζω | I intend to say these things I think that he will say these things |
The marker /ειν is the combination of a theme vowel -ε- and the active infinitive marker /εν. Since all forms of the future are thematic, we find only /ειν in the future active.
