Athematic Aorist Active Infinitive

Introduction

Most verbs that are athematic in the aorist are /μι verbs, for which see here. Athematic aorist verbs that are not /μι verbs include ἁλο/, βα/, γνο/, and δυ/. They form the aorist active infinitive by adding /ναι. Remember that a short vowel regularly lengthens when a marker is added to it:

          ἁλό/ναι > ἀλῶναι
          βά/ναι > βῆναι
          γνό/ναι > γνῶναι
          δύ/ναι > δῦναι

BASE/ναι

The infinitive marker /ναι is the combination of two active infinitive markers: zero-grade /ν and /αι.

Unlike these athematic verbs, /μι verbs form the aorist active infinitive with /εναι.
