Genitive Plural

Introduction

The universal marker of the genitive plural is /ων:

     παίδ/ων > παιδῶν
     βασιλέϝ/ων > βασιλέων

Intermediate

In the first declension, -άων may weaken to -έων (Ionic) or contract to -ῶν (Attic):

κεφαλά/ων > κεφαλάων or κεφαλέων (Ionic) or κεφαλῶν (Attic)

In the second declension, /ων replaces the -ο/ of the base:

     δώρο/ων > δώρων

In the third declension, if there is a vowel before /ων, there will not be contraction:

     πόλε/ων > πόλεων

In Attic, /ων contracts with a previous vowel only if it is a neuter ὄρεσ/ type base:

ὄρεσ/ων > ὄρεων (Ionic) or ὄρων (Attic)
